Which Materials Are Used for Slurry Pump Casings?

Slurry pump casing materials must be matched to abrasion, corrosion, particle impact and temperature. Compare hard-metal castings and lining options using the actual slurry conditions.

Start with the slurry, not a material ranking

A pump casing material influences wear, reliability and maintenance cost, but no single material is best for every slurry. Selection requires information about the solids and the liquid, together with the operating conditions.

Important inputs include particle hardness, shape and size, solids concentration, slurry chemistry, temperature, pump speed and the relevant hydraulic duty.

High chromium white iron and other hard-metal grades

High chromium white iron is widely used for abrasive slurry wet-end components. Its carbide-containing structure can provide useful resistance to abrasive wear when the grade, heat treatment and application are compatible.

The name high chromium white iron covers different specifications; it does not define one universal composition or corrosion limit. Older nickel-containing abrasion-resistant irons and other metallic grades also need to be assessed by their actual specification and duty.

Polymer and other non-metallic systems

Lined constructions can be considered where the design calls for particular abrasion or chemical-resistance characteristics. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, commonly called UHMWPE, is one example of an engineering polymer used in some pump constructions.

Chemical resistance depends on the exact formulation, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions. Do not apply a general acid-concentration or temperature claim to every polymer-lined casing without validated compatibility data.

Ceramic and composite constructions

Silicon carbide and other ceramic systems are used in selected wear and corrosion applications. Some designs combine a supporting metal structure with a wear-resistant lining.

The lining attachment, impact conditions, geometry and the complete pump construction matter as much as the nominal material. A ceramic component should not be assumed to be a direct replacement for a metal part in an unmodified pump.

Compare lifetime cost and verify the part

Consider purchase price together with replacement labour, downtime, efficiency and the consequences of failure. Use service records from comparable duty where available.

For a custom casing enquiry, send the pump model, part number, drawing, original grade, slurry data and wear photographs. Red Apple Casting can review casting-related requirements against the supplied information; final material and hydraulic compatibility should be confirmed for the specific pump and service.
